Financial considerations play an important part in research, engineering, production, marketing and other areas. Graduates of our finance program are prepared for key financial roles critical to business and governmental operations.
OUR CURRICULUM
Our Finance curriculum offers three areas of specialization meeting the varied interests of our students: financial management, financial institutions and investments. Whatever career path you choose, we offer the specialization to take you where you want to go.
Finance majors must, for courses taken at SIU, maintain a cumulative 2.00 GPA in courses with the finance (FIN) prefix (with the exception of Finance 200, 270, 310 and 323) and also earn a minimum grade of "C" in each of the courses.
ELECTIVES
You can explore different areas and acquire the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to achieve your individual occupational goals through our business economics electives. Find out about the various options and electives we offer by visiting the academic advisement webpage.
ADVANCED STUDY
Graduates from our undergraduate finance program are prepared for advanced degree studies in three different areas: Master of Business Administration, Master of Finance or Master of Quantitative Finance.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS
Our program gives undergraduate finance students the basic understanding of finance systems. Graduates of the program should be able to effectively communicate in both oral and written formats in a business setting and apply their knowledge of finance to unstructured problems. They will be prepared to work effectively as part of a team and in a computer-based environment.
SPECIALIZATIONS
If you’re interested in a career within the financial operations of businesses or public institutions, the financial management program will give you the preparation you need. The financial institutions specialization is for those who want to work with financial intermediaries and financial markets. The investments concentration is for those with a desire to work in security analysis and portfolio management.
INVESTMENTS SPECIALIZATION, FINANCE
The investments specialization will appeal to you if you are interested in security analysis, portfolio management and the use of futures and option to manage the investment of financial instruments.
Our coursework covers a wide variety of related topics including security analysis, Markowitz portfolio theory, portfolio performance measurement and attribution, pricing of futures and options, risk management, using derivatives and the application of investment techniques in a corporate setting.
Many of our investments specialization students also participate in the Saluki Investment Fund, helping with the student-managed portfolio valued at approximately $1,000,000.
