专业概况

在这里学什么？

If you’re interested in the German language, literature or culture, intend to pursue a career where a background in foreign languages and culture would be useful, or are considering teaching German at the secondary-school level, the German degree program is for you. German is the most widely spoken language in Europe, and Germany plays a significant role in the global economy, making this degree program well suited to a variety of careers nationally and internationally.

You’ll gain a solid foundation in the German language while also studying aspects of the political, social and cultural life of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. You’ll have the opportunity to study abroad with your professors and classmates in our summer Berlin program, or join programs at universities such as Berlin, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Innsbruck, Marburg, Munich, Tübingen or Vienna. Internships with German firms or organizations may be taken for credit. Back on campus, students are strongly encouraged to attend the German conversation hour, or Stammtisch, and also have access to an extensive German-language video collection.

Program Objectives

The German major is offered by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. This program is of interest to the following groups of students:

Those who have a special interest in the German language, literature, and culture

Those who intend to enter fields in which a background in foreign languages and literatures is desirable, such as international business and law, trade, journalism, science, library science, government service, and international service organizations.

Those who plan to teach German in secondary schools. Since most secondary schools require their teachers to teach more than one subject, students planning to enter teaching at this level should plan their programs carefully. They should combine a major in one language and its literature with a minor or at least a meaningful sequence of courses in another subject. Dual majors also are possible. All German majors are strongly encouraged to double major or include a relevant minor in their studies.

为来自中国的学生设计 Admission to UNH is competitive. A student’s academic record, including program of study, class rigor, standing in their class, and achievement is of primary importance in assessing a student’s potential for success at UNH. Students should complete the following sequences of college preparatory coursework to be considered minimally qualified for baccalaureate admission to the University: Demonstrated proficiency in English, Three years of mathematics, Three years of science, Three years of social sciences and Two years of a single foreign language (If English is your first language). International students, whose primary language is not English, must submit the results of a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo. The recommended minimum TOEFL score is 213 (computer version) or 550 (paper version) or 80 (Internet version). The minimum IELTS acceptable proficiency grade is 6.5. The minimum Duolingo scores are 70.
