Overview

Pharmacology is an interdisciplinary field which combines molecular and cellular biology and physiology with biochemistry. It is the study of drug action; how the human body processes a drug (pharmacokinetics) or how the drug changes physiologic processes of the human body (pharmacodynamics). What is especially interesting is that Pharmacologists play a pivotal role in the discovery and development of safe and effective new therapies. The discipline of pharmacology differs from the profession of pharmacy, which is the science of formulating and dispensing approved drugs to patients.

MS in Pharmacology students are immersed in a specialized pharmacology program geared toward preparing them for careers in Nonclinical & Clinical drug safety research, which is part of the drug development process. Many students enter our MS program looking to explore career options in drug development or use our program as a "Gap Year" experience with the goal of continuing their education in medical school (MD) or graduate school (PhD).

Career

We strive to provide several opportunities for students to discover their scientific passion and support them as they work toward their individual career goals. These goals often vary. Some students may be focused on improving their application for medical school, others may be looking for unique career opportunities in the drug safety industry, still others may be completely uncertain about their next step. Due to the diversity of our students’ interests, our program works diligently to introduce them to new experiences in drug safety while providing a solid foundation in pharmacology. About half of our students use our program as a gap year experience, preparing for advanced academic training in the life sciences (MD, PhD, DMD, PharmD, DVM), with our remaining graduates employed in academia or with contract research organizations associated with the pharmaceutical industry.
