The Department of Art & Design offers students rigorous courses of study leading to master's and doctoral degrees in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture. The program emphasizes critical and imaginative thinking about the ways the world is mediated by technologies of vision, images, objects, and visual events. Work in the classroom and museum is designed to interrogate multiple forms of modernity, develop fluency in critical theory, intensify perception into inter-cultural visualities, and create knowledge about the global flow of material things and ideas. It prepares students for curatorial work, cultural journalism, teaching, as well as work in heritage programs and research-intensive fields.

Master’s Degrees in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture

The MA program is relatively small to ensure that students receive close individual attention and support. Students work with professors in their arenas of historical interest and with the HADVC Graduate Program Advisor to explore and expand their particular path of intellectual and creative endeavor. Students may enroll in either the course-based or the thesis-based MA program.

Course-based MA:

The course-based MA program typically requires 8 courses, including a capstone, which may be taken over a period of one to four years through either full or part time enrollment. The course-based program is recommended for those students who wish to explore art history in relation to unique professional and scholarly goals.

Thesis-based MA:

The thesis-based MA program typically requires 6 courses over two academic years of full-time enrollment. The thesis-based program is recommended for those students who plan to move on to doctoral study, curatorial practice, professional arts writing, and other writing-intensive professions.

为来自中国的学生设计 The Faculty's minimum admission requirements for the master's thesis and course-based programs are a four year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, in physical education, kinesiology, recreation or another related degree, with a minimum admission grade point average of 3.0 on most 4.0 grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on the most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent).
