Prepare for a career specializing in the elderly and senior citizens at human service agencies Participate in a 12-credit supervised internship at a human service agency Learn from faculty who have strong commitments to quality instruction and advisement

What Will I Learn?

Courses include gerontology, introductory and applied counseling techniques; psychology of adult development and aging; elder abuse and neglect; sociology of aging and death; and nutrition and the elderly. One semester of full-time supervised field work in a human service agency is also included in the curriculum.

The study option in adult development and aging prepares you for a career related to senior citizens and the elderly in public and private human service agencies.

What Are My Career Opportunities?

Approximately 25 to 30 percent of human development and family relations majors pursue advanced degrees in counseling, social work, psychology, law, public administration or other related fields. Many others enter the job market immediately after graduation.

Graduates holding degrees in human development and family relations from SUNY Plattsburgh are currently working in such diverse fields as:

Family advocacy Crisis center counseling Nursing home activity direction Planned Parenthood education

Human development and family relations prepares students for careers in public and private human service agencies. Emphasis on learning to help individuals and families solve problems related to child development, family relations, aging, nutritional planning for individuals and families, family financial management.
