GENERAL INFORMATION

CCJ 201 (Intro to CJ Systems) and 290 (Intro to Criminological Studies) are prerequisites for most Criminology and Criminal Justice courses. They can be taken concurrently and 201 is not a prerequisite for 290.

CCJ 316 (Intro to CJ Research) is a prerequisite for CCJ 317 (Intro to CJ Statistics) and most 400-level Criminology and Criminal Justice courses.

Remember to check the course catalog or schedule for prerequisites of other Criminology and Criminal Justice courses.

Internships (CCJ 395): Prerequisites are 2.75 GPA (overall and in the major) and CCJ 201 and CCJ 290 plus 12 additional hours in Criminology and Criminal Justice; student must submit internship application during the first 30 days of the preceding spring or fall semester; no more than 3 hours of CCJ 395 (Supervised Field Experiences) can be counted toward the Criminology and Criminal Justice major.

Transfer students from out of state or from four-year institutions are advised to acquire a syllabus from each law enforcement, criminal justice, or Criminology and Criminal Justice course they have taken prior to entering SIU. These syllabi are used by Criminology and Criminal Justice advisement to evaluate transfer credit.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

Students must complete these required CCJ courses: CCJ 201, 290, 310 (Intro to Criminal Law) or CCJ 360 (Law and Social Control), 316, and 317. (15 hours)

In addition, at least 27 hours of Criminology and Criminal Justice electives to total 42 hours in Criminology and Criminal Justice coursework. As part of the 27 hours of Criminology and Criminal Justice electives, students must complete at least four 400-level Criminology and Criminal Justice courses totaling 12 credit hours.

At least 24 of the 42 hours of CCJ course work must be CCJ major courses completed at SIU.

Students must complete all University Core Curriculum requirements.

To officially enter the Criminology and Criminal Justice major, students must have a 2.0 overall GPA.

Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
