This degree path is designed for students who will complete an interdisciplinary liberal arts bachelor’s degree in addition to the Pharm-D degree. Students will complete all the pre-pharm requirements in three years along with making progress on degree requirements so that they will be on track to complete a BA degree at the end of the fourth year (which coincides with the first professional year in the UC College of Pharmacy). This degree uses coursework and part of a longitudinal project from the first professional year to complete undergraduate degree requirements, including the capstone. Students in this program will have the advantage of acquiring the intellectual knowledge and practical skills of a liberal arts education while gaining the added credential of the undergraduate degree in addition to the Pharmacy degree.

Success

Individuals successful in the pharmacy program love learning and science, in particular. They enjoy caring for others and are gifted in communication. Typically they are detail oriented and a team player.

All colleges of pharmacy base their admission strongly on demonstrated ability in the laboratory sciences. This is only natural given the nature of pharmacy education itself. A student’s overall academic record, score on the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), pharmacy-related experience and extra-curricular activities are all factors.

Career

The profession of pharmacy offers excellent opportunities to those interested in science. Registered pharmacists find careers in the areas of community/retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, wholesaling of drug products, pharmaceutical manufacturing, scientific research, government work and teaching. Community pharmacy affords pharmacists an opportunity to become owners of their own businesses. Drug product wholesaling has become an important part of the industry’s distribution method; positions of various types may also be available in this area.

The manufacturing of drug products is one of America’s largest industries, requiring astute attention, accuracy and scientific skill. Every manufactured drug product must be carefully compounded, tested and analyzed before it is offered to the public. Manufacturers also employ pharmacists as medical service representatives who provide drug, clinical and other information to health professions.
